Fortunately things have calmed down slightly at work and we successfully recovered the the Demo 1 spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>I used this time to accomplish most of the installation work on the left external step. The first thing I did was open up the outer skin hole size to accommodate the weld around the tube and the baseplate. I also trimmed down the step tube length so that it&#8217;s nearly in contact with the F-726 rib.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f94.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6826\" src=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f94-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f94.jpg 768w, http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f94-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The baseplate was match drilled to the fuselage skin. To get the baseplate to match the curvature of the fuselage, I clamped the plate in a vise and used a combination of a hammer and crescent wrench to form the plate to the appropriate shape. This took quite a bit of guess-and-check.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f96.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6827\" src=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f96-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f96.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f96-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f96-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This image shows the external step mounted against the fuselage. I used the rivet line of the F-724 bulkhead as the guide to orient the step. The top of the baseplate is 90 degrees to the rivet line. When drilling the holes the pass through the bulkhead, I removed 2 rivets and backdrilled the plate.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f99.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6828\" src=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f99-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f99.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f99-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/rv7aircraftlog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_4f99-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see where the 2 holes were back drilled. \u00a0I&#8217;ll try to flatted those countersunk holes before I rivet the step in place.
